its SUPPOSED to be a tufted chitmouse, i did it with oil pastels today, took me about oh maybe and hour working straight through, took me FOREVER to find a position that would look actually like a bird and not a blob^^ tell me what you think, its kinda n the impressionism type idea; be gentle with the comments, but cc is welcome-be gentle. i would really like to see what everyones HONEST opinion is. i did this for my friends mom, i didnt say hi to her first today when i was over at their house and usually im the polite one so i hope she likes this, and because she loves birds, shes got like 4 and then; okay stopping im babbling lol. i bet yall would like to stop seeing this black type and see a colorful picture now eh, well without further ado

my first bird drawing, cause i cant draw them well so ive kinda stayed away from them :/ so this is my attempt at it

Did you mean a Tufted Titmouse? That's what it looks like to me Smile (sorry, I'm a bit of a bird nerd) Anywho, I think the shape of the bird and flowers are great, but it looks like you hurried a lot on the coloring and didn't even erase the original pencil lines? I think art is a lot about patience - (here I'm being a bit of a hypocrite, because I really like to get things done and sometimes rush too!) Maybe someday I'll take my own advice and slow down. Smile I think you have a lot of promise!

Gum erasers work wonders for blending and smoothing out your pastels. Q-tips are also very handy for sublet shading.

Regular drawing/printer paper tends to be a little sticky when your trying to smooth out your pastels. I would recommend priming your paper with gesso. This makes it easier to 'slide' the pastel across the paper and smooth it out. Another thing about paper is it NEEDS to be primed other wise the paper will absorb the oil in pastels and become transparent or discolored over time.

You could also paint with the pastels like you would with oil paint if you got a brush and some solvent for oil paint.

Try to stay away from using black with oil pastes, it will mix with you other colors and muddle them. For shaiding and out lines try really dark blues or purples. For things like eyes and beeks try mixing a little bit of black with other really dark colors.

I hope that helps if I think of anything else I’ll let you know
