But there's also ponies that are limited edition (like G4 Rainbow Flash and Daisy Dreams which were released in a promo pack outside of the US) which will only go up in price for people in the USA.. so.. yeah. Besides my parents are usually cool with buying me ponies as long as I wait until payday.

I remember having this dilemma.
The best option I'd think would be to get your parents to make an account for you. But that does have some disadvantages too. But I can't really think of them.

I think it often depends on the trader. Dunno if anyone here remembers Li'l Tot? When I first got online and started trading she was quite active in the pony comm and she was trading and selling at age 12. She was also one of the most mature and trustworthy traders in the community at the time.
That said, I think the age rule here protects underage people rather than restricts them. It would be nice if there were no scammers, but the trader support forum proves that though they are rare, they are still out there and that probably will never change. It's easy for someone to take advantage of someone who is known to be young, and it has happened before.
I think I was 15 when I first got in touch with my first trade partner, and she sent me two ponies (one was Mimic) long in advance of us formally trading (when she visited the UK in the summer of 1998. By this time we had a huge box for her and she had a huge box for us!). I always think that she was brave, taking a chance on an unknown 15 year old and believing that I knew what I was talking about.
The online community is a much wider place, now, but perhaps most significantly, there are more non-pony people out there looking to make a quick quid or buck on selling MLP. There is more danger associated with trading and selling - back in 1998, there were scammers but they were few and the community was close knit enough that we were able to keep tabs on them and exchange information about them fairly effectively. Now that's pretty difficult.
I know it's hard to wait, Berry, but I'm sure even where Ebay is concerned, your folks are there to watch over what you buy (since you can't have an ebay acct of your own till you're 18). With the arena, regulation is done by members, and not a corporation able to throw resources into investigating fraud and theft.
Trading is awesome, but it can also be heart-rending if you're the victim of a scam. I had some of my best experiences in pony collecting through trading with online members, but I also suffered the worst experiences in my collecting history because of one bad trader who didn't stop at stealing my items but took it further, to personal abuse. There are a lot of good people and most of them are here. There are also NOT good people and it's important not to forget that they are out there. My bad trader experiences almost drove me out of pony collecting forever, because of the trouble and harassment that resulted from it. That's not something anyone should have to go through, but especially not someone who's still young.
Sometimes it's better to wait. We'll all still be here in two years time, trust me, and you have a great opportunity to get a feel for the community and the kind of collector you want to be!
