(mods, move this if I've got the wrong forum, I don't know if it should be in Art or Adoptables!)
"Dusky" has been my pony name/internet handle and pony persona since 2004, I've never had another or changed her. She's always been an earth pony, she's always had this crackers colour scheme that is both pretty and a pain in the tail for anyone to colour (sorry, adoptable makers)!
I feel I should change her now, though. Especially since I've finally found the confidence to come out. Put bluntly, I'm transgender, and it's taken me longer than I've been into ponies to figure out my mind and feel okay enough to share that with folks.
"Dusky" is pretty, but she's very "she" whereas I'm really not. "Dusky" is sweet and naive and clumsy, which is everything I was in 2004, she's a cute pony but she's not me any more. What I am now is a thing more eloquent, and wiser for the metaphorical scars I've amassed. Whilst I want to change my persona I don't want to suddenly be a 'special snowflake' unicorn-pegasus-dragonborn-flutterpony with neon spots and plot-significant jewellery.
Has your pony persona ever changed, and why? Was it as big a thing for you or am I flapping up the wrong rainbow here?
eta: oops, forgot references, "Dusky"'s adoptable references are in here: Click me!

I think it is okay to change your 'sonas as you grow and change!
My fursona was once a male dragon x wolf mix, but I am a straight female and even though I love the character I put him as my side character and changed by fursona to be a feline female anthro, that's plain on the outside but full of personality... I am in the works of contemplation a pony-sona or if I should spice up my current character and give her a pony verson.
It was very hard for me to change from my original character named Paints to the new one I used named Fayre. I didn't want to because Paints was my character from 2005-2010, and five years really got me attached too him. Only he no longer fit me. Paints no longer fit me because I found out who I was and what I wanted to do with my life and I no longer was scared and timid. Paints was shy and timid and is as innocent as a baby butterfly.
Dusky is beautiful and probably hard to draw with all that uniqueness! But if you believe she no longer is you then it's okay to modify her or even just change it up to that special unicorn-pegasus-dragonborn-flutterpony with neon spots and plot-significant jewellery.
And it is hard to change your 'sona, but depending on how attached you get or how long you have had them I think it can change the feelings on the 'sona a lot. <33
Good luck with changing your 'sona!

I didn't change my persona, since she was so special to me, so I simply made a new one, which was much more my personality. She's only new, though. I haven't changed or forgotten my old one. Maybe you'd rather create a new persona, which is more your style. It's up to you whether you want to change her or create a new one. Remember that you can have as many personas you want to suit all your different past or present personalities!

I agree with making a new one too. I have three now Rainbow_starshine I had when I joined, she was a dark blue with an hourglass. She represented things I liked, but not really ME I stopped using her entirely. Then I grew up, and got married and made dove, she's more representative of myself, but not every facet of me, I don't use rainbow anymore, so I made dream chaser to replace her lol who is still a dark blue, but has a rainbow colored mane and wings, I suppose she's more representative of all the things I *CAN* be. Then! I made Aleya, who is more representative of all the mysterious, faerie like quality about myself.
I mostly use dove for images, adopts and ect. What I mean to say, is that you don't have to relinquish your past, since it is what made you who you are, but that doesn't mean you can change or make a new pony-sona to show who you have grown into and are now

I think its fine to change a persona, however, mine hasn't changed from the day she was created, although I have picked up a "sister" for her. I did originally have a unicorn based off my RL looks, and didn't really take to her too much, neon, the unicorn I use all the time is so me, the other one made me seem so dull & boring lol. Although I am, I don't like to think I am

i have made a new persona, too. actually my old one showed too many of my "scars" and i felt like it was time for something more cheerful, to represent the brighter side of me. so Candy Gloss is now my main persona, and I recently adopted another character too. (Burning Heart)
All together, I have seven pony characters.

There's nothing wrong with changing your persona. Every seven years, you change and grow as a person, so there's nothing wrong with you feeling that your old persona is no longer you.
Its like... You can think of it as a photograph. You're not the you that you were when you were 3, are you? No. You're a different person! :3
Sorry if I'm getting all weird on you <<;;;; But this is my feeling too. I just haven't... grown? I haven't changed enough to warrent getting rid of Stardust Sonata--she is probably always going to be me. She was Pinkie Pie before Pinkie Pie even existed!! XD;; Soooo yeah... .-.;;;
Follow your heart, sweetie. :3 You can do whatever you want to do!
Happy Holidays!

I changed Neko this year. it's a tiny change in her design.. but this year was SO full of change for me! I just couldn't keep her and her personality as it were.
I originally designed her as a pegasus with a pink and white stripe in her hair.
I removed the wings, and the hair stripes, and laso gave her a new hairdo. And added "fangs" (it's not fangs... but my "fang" teeth have a tendency to show even though my mouth's closed - I call them derp teeth and kind of hate them, but David loves them - and well.. they're me.) That's a teensy tiny change, but she's much more me.
I played around with huge design changes - with a whole new persona, for a while, when I was still confused about where I was at. But it landed on this earth pony design for Neko, and I love her
uhm.. that's my story. You go ahead and change your persona, or create a new one, if you feel that yours doesn't fit

I do a lot of tabletop roleplaying, and a lot of characters go passing through. I find that new characters that come to me and "stick" even after the game has wrapped almost inevitably are sticking around for a reason. They are aspects of me; they have something to teach me, and if I listen, I will learn. Some have been with me for years. The newest one has been . . . revelatory. He has changed me so much, and gotten me through so much.
Your situation sounds a little like mine, only in reverse. You are in need of a change to your existing character to reflect the new parts of yourself that are being born. I really think that altering your 'sona would probably be good, ultimately. You have been through a lot lately, a lot of changes, and you have a new road ahead of you full of new possibilities. (I say this without knowing you, because I have a few friends who are transgendered, so I know that the road is never smooth for a trans person. But it's better to be on it, and go for the ride, than pretend to be someone you are not.)
In a lot of ways, our personas are the people we want to be, the people we try to be, they are something to aim for. I think a change might help you find your way, and give you something to shoot for.
Congratulations, by the way! It takes guts to come out, and I admire your courage. <3 Good luck to you, and strength, and peace.

I've had a rough 'Luna' character since I was 10 I reckon; before I even knew about sites like this and I just thought I was some weird kid who didn't grow out of MLP and wanted her own MLP self.
And then theres Spiderlegs; who started out as a cat with white legs, green eyes and orange 'people' hairstyles, who slowly turned into a pony character, who finally got transferred into a Purrpony; cat + pony = Purrpony! ^^
Luna, I don't think, will ever grow out for me. In old pictures I used to have, whenever I wanted to draw myself as a pony I'd never color it in (and leave all white) because I couldn't think of the right colors, so eventually, up til now when I'm 15, I gradually used a white pony instead of a 'blank' pony.
edit: And Whistle! Can't forget her! Whistle's been hear probably the longest (and I never really considered her a persona til after Luna popped up!)
Whistle was the result of a pencil case with only the yellow, red and blue pencil working and viola! Whistle was born! A beautiful little winged unicorn pony who was left white, with red hair and blue tips, with yellow eyes! ^^ She was a childhood memory hehe

I think it's great to have a changing character, since everyone changes after time- sometimes the events in their lives changes their character. ^__^
My special pony is in my avatar. She's a pure white flying unicorn, with white eyes that have a rainbow pearl/abalone shimmer to them. It may seem silly to say, but she has been with me since I was a little girl- when I used to play pretend as ponies when I was three or four (I was two when I first watched MLP), and I think that is when she came around.
At the time, she was white with rainbow hair, then when I was ten or so, I changed her to pure white (she also had a cat, wolf, and dragon form, as I used to play pretend as those animals a lot as well). Her character also changed to be like how I am this day, and as I go through phases of life, so does her name. I have never actually decided on a name, since I always end up changing it, but the earliest name I remember from childhood was Aurora. She is just "me." As for her story, she was almost always a princess from far away who was looking for her family, and escaping some bad guy, mostly one who wanted to capture her.
I was about 12 when I finally decided to give her a special My Little Pony background, which was when I threw in the idea of the Rainbow of Light as her family heirloom as royalty.

Personally, I have always had Baby Rainbou as she is, designwise.
I think it's more about letting your character as a person grow, rather than starting up again. When I first made her, Rainbou had little to no personality of her own. She was just me at 13 years old. But as time went on, she took some of the better and worse changes I myself had gone through to create the personality she represents now-- Instead of being eager and flamboyant as we both used to be, she keeps a dignified and quiet mindset that counterpoints the mask of enthusiasm I put on in my real life.
So to me, your pony character should be allowed to change as you do. But hey, I also have, like, 40 other pony characters (none of whom I would really call a persona, though.) Just do what you want, and bunk with the rest.

Hey Dusky,
You'll remember me as 'Tinka The Unicorn' I still have the name badge you
made for me for the convention in 2005
As you can see, I made a different persona that better suits 'ME'
Have you thought about using a pony generator to get a few ideas?
I like this one: jwebgen.com/generate
