Every time I chew hard food-i.e. apples, meat, tootsie rolls, etc, my jaw cracks.

I never noticed this until my husband pointed it out to me awhile back-and since then I have been SO self conscious of chewing in front of people.

Is that normal?

I don't think it's normal I would talk to the dentist to see what he says O_O.

I can crack my jaw at will. It feels good. But with the food, that might not be that normal, but I don't know.

Apparently I've been doing it for years before my husband said something. He thought I knew I was doing it.

But well...I didn't...and now that I know that I do it, its more pronounced to me and well-I think that people notice that I do it.

The jaw popping isn't a good thing and its genetic, usually it means that your putting too much pressure on your jaw which the causes it to pop.

Most of the time its genetic, some times it can be caused by shifting of the teeth or in my case my jaw started popping after I got my teeth straitened and I should have told my orthodontist about it BEFORE I got my braces off.

Anyway the jaw popping thing has a specific name, you might want to ask your dentist and you might want to ask what you can do to avoid it/change it ect..

I only know about this because my chemistry teacher mentioned that he could not chew gum or hard foods because of his jaw popping and said it was not a good thing to be doing.

Perhaps you have an overbite where the top part of the teeth rest in front of the lower teeth when your mouth closes? I've heard of that causing cracking/popping noises, especially when eating. The dentist would probably help in determining the cause for sure though. Happy

No, it's not normal. I get that too but my jaw actually pops out of joint if I bite into something hard or open my mouth too wide. There is a name for it but I forget.

I don't have an overbite, never braces, or a retainer....figures with my luck I'd something completely obscure.

I rarely chew gum, but I love apples (even though I am already not supposed to be eating them) My tooth has a tiny chip-and everytime i get it bonded, it breaks off again.

that can be a sign of TMJ...you would want to talk to your dentist about it...he might refer you to a specialist.

Yes TMJ, that is the name of it! I was reading this trying to think of what it was called, lol! I would definitely ask your dentist about it.

What do they do for it? Like what would they say about it?

Since I've never heard about that before. *searches in google*
