They can be very assertive, but I've never met a genuinely mean one. If you get one, training is VERY important. Otherwise they can get very pushy, which can be interpreted as mean.

They can be if not properly trained like any dog. They do have a natural tendency to think for themselves and that often causes a lot of problems. Huskies are one of the breeds that needs to stay with the mom nad litter at least ten weeks to learn bite inhibition properly, preferablly twelve. They are mouthy and a lot of people see that as biting but they just like to feel everyhting with their mouth Poke Tounge

Now with other animals they are not always the best. My girl has killed one of every wild animal around us. We went on a walk on a leash and she stuck ehr head in the weeds and came out with a racoon. they are neat dogs but not for a first time,or onexperienced owner. The lady I got mine from lost her kitty to her male. they had never had a problem and he just reached over and got him one day Sad You gotta be carefull with them. they have a high prey drive. they are also one of the dogs most likely to end up in a shelter or just dumped,my old trainer was devoted jsut to huskys and he always had at least five looking for homes.
Here is my girl www.dogster.com/?23131

wow, thanks guys.
My dad said a husky killed one of his own dogs when he was younger.
He probally will never let me get one, anyway, we have to many cats.
and he won't gt a german shepherd either, because our neighbor has one.
we had a goldien retreiver once, but we had to give it back to the g.r.i.n
because we could'nt afford her medicine. she didn't like me, though, for some reason.

I've heard they are very hyper dogs, and they whine a lot. I heard they also arn't good with cats, and some children. But it's how you raise them. They are lovely dogs.

Tokala~
If you are looking for a dog check out petfinders=.com they have wonderful rescued dogs in need of a home...you may find one there that your dad would let you get!!!! Big Grin

As for Huskies,I HAVE 2 Right now and I have had more so I know a bit about them.

NEED HUGE FENCE...I have seen these dogs climb a 6 foot fence and the need supervision at all times like a child. If you ask me!!! Big Grin
Also I have never met a MEAN one,but they do like to play bite a bit(at least my year old one does). Can be a problem with small kids due to the hyperness and play biting...but I have a 3 year little girl and mine do well with each other, but I have taught my dogs and daughter well.

They are hyper and need walk or playtime every day. They are diggers.
They are not much on being whinny or barking, but they do AWAWWWW(HOWL) like a wolf or it sounds like singing to me.
In the puppy stage they love to chew, but most puppies do that.

They are headstrong and SUPER smart...I have seen mine open a closed inside door, bathroom door to be exact(it was the bar like kind).
They are problem solvers and if one thing doesn't work they will try something else.
The are super subborn dogs too, mine just chewed of my stair railings,so I went to putting mouse traps up on my stair landing and he finally leaves them alone.

I think any dogs could be aggeressive,I think it depends on how they are raised and what happens when they get upset.
Also they are certainly not good dogs to have around any kind of small animals AT ALL...just this year mine have killed 4 snakes,2 moles,1 opposum, and my Shay has caught birds out of midair.
So they HAVE A HUGE PREY DRIVE!!!!!!

Although I must say that they were my DREAM DOG GROWING UP and when I got my first one I knew as much as I could read about them, but still needed to know more. These dogs will run away and NEVER RETURN IF YOU ARE NOT CAREFUL! Both mine are microchiped and I have fence backyard and everytime some comes to the front door before we even open it we grab the dogs.

Some people freak out though when they hear one of mine has wolf in her and they go nuts as to stay away from her, however she loves kids and will ask to go out as they come home from school so they can pet her along the way and then she will come in Happy as can be.
Both of mine are big babies, but you have to be confident with them.

WITH ANY DOG TRAINING IS KEY AND LOVE IS NEXT!!!!!!!!!
THINK ABOUT RESCUE THOUGH,my husky puppy that just turned a year in Sept...was rescued and if I would have got him it would have certain death for him.
He is super sweet, has puppy problem, but nothing that can't be over come.
Also when I adopted him the adopters where worry we would bring him back since we have a child and he was so scared of her at the start.
I reassured them that wasn't going to be the case and I would never give him up.
Welll I sent them pictures of him and my daughter laying on the floor together and he is super protective of my daughter NOW!

Do YOUR READING THOUGH ON THIS BREED!!!!!!!!

I hope my info helps you.
My Life wouldn't be worth living without my sibes.

Honestly no library books could have prepared me Poke Tounge They all make it seem so easy!its sad but a lot of the dog books are written by people who honestly know nothing about them. Here is a great forum with a lot of husky owners
www.chazhound.com/forums/
Here is the breed specific part,I'm sure there are some threads on huskies already but you could always ask there
www.chazhound.com/foru...y.php?f=17
My girl can't even stay in a fence. We got a run with a top and caught her hanging from the top so we got rid of that pretty quickly! I wish I culd let her out in a fence.

Tokala~ Joce is right no book can totally prepare a husky owner, but it can help you to get to know the breed.

Also WoW Joce!!!!!!!!! Some husky you just can't trust to stay in a fence.
Lucky for me I can let both of mine out in our fenced yard.Although I know without a doubt that my Shayla could get out of it if she wanted to.
Still you husky is beautiful.

Boy, two breeds I would never recommend as your first dog: Huskies and Dalmations. I think both are beautiful, wonderful animals, but like other folks have been saying here, they are challenging. Huskies especially need a LOT of exercise. They were bred to run for hours, and that's what they want to do.

Huskies arnt evil, all dogs have dogs who are mean. Huskies are just a dog that needs alot of training and excersize. Like German Shepherds. They are bred to pull sleds, and other things through snow fast and steady. So if you want one I suggest long walks, and in winter, if you get snow, buy a harness and let them pull someone along in a sleigh if they can, great muscle builder. I owned a husky once, he was so cute. Oh and if you get a Husky mine loved howling, not sure if all them do, but I hear they are very talkitive. They arnt mean, just tricky. If you train a husky they will be your best and most loyal friend, they just need alot of exersize and games they are very intellagent breeds.

Huskies are difficult, but they can be very loving! they need ALOT of exercise and they can be very hyper at times. But, if you treat it with love then you'll get a wonderful dog!! Smile

Happy Forgot to add...
Most Huskies do love to run,but my Shayla is a huge sleepy baby, while my Luni bounces of the walls like a rabbit, but we bought him a ball throwing toy and he loves it...wears him down too!!!!

So personality is different for each one.
Most do try and run away though...my Shay got away once from us when we moved into our new house and the front door was not shut and it blew open.
Lucky for me GOING TO SOUND WEIRD,but I had a dream about this happening and in my dream she was in the woods, well our is right across from the park and that is where she was and it took a good 2 HRS to get her(one of the scariest days of my life).

I treat my dogs with respect and I have taught my daughter to do that as well, she knows that if you tease them they DO BITE!!!!

Like I said before though I WOULD NEVER TRADE MY HUSKIES FOR ANY OTHER DOG!!!!!! I will never be able to be without one ever!

Tokala~Wanted to give you this bit of info though....you might want to check in the Klee Kai it is a minature Husky and alot of the so called bad things that are in a husky have been breed out of them.
They are super small lap babies, and might get along with cats better...the bad thing is they cost alot.
Since you like the look of the HUsky though this may be a better option for you since they are smaller and easier to handle.
Hope this helps even more.
