Maine Coons are a breed of cat.... A LARGE breed of Cat.
There is an old myth that they are a cross between cats and raccons.
It is believed that their ancestors came over on ships, but the exact stories differ. During colonial times longhaired cats were considered an oddity among Europeans, so it is likely they came from elsewhere.
One story links them to Marie Antoinette's 6 Persian or Angora cats who were taken to safety while she was not.
A popular legend tells of Captin Coon of Biddleford Pool, Maine who supposedly was exceedingly fond of cats and was known for the longhairs he aquired during his travels. When longhaired kittens showed up in ports he had visited they were refered to as "Coon's cats".
Most agree that ship cats mixed with local mousers and passed on the longhaired gene. The gene is recessive, so it probably took several generations for the effects to be seen. The cats with heavier coats were better able to survive the harsh New England winters.
Not only known for their size, Maine Coon's have legendary hunting skills. There is one story from the Revolutionary War era of a Westport Island cat that kept its family alive when their supplies ran out by bringing home fish from the frozen river.
