Is that why when they released the film on DVD they put G2s on the cover?
I thought it was just so they could sell it in the new range.
I can't imagine why they would use G1 images anymore anyway.
It is probably true cos don't things run out of copyright after 20-25 years, or is that after the writer has died? I dunno.
Cos there seem to be a lot of unofficial G1 t shirts out there.

Their patent on the G1's ran out, that's why they're using G2 artwork.

if they lost the patent, it would only mean that anyone can use the artwork.
If they sold the rights to someone else exclusively, it could mean that they were no longer allowed to use their own stuff, but i think that's unlikely.
If they licensed a certain reproduction, it means they probably still retain the rights to the g1s and just don't exercise them much for whatever reason.
I got my Samus Aran figure from joyride studios in 2002. The backcard explained tips and tricks for a game that had been released in '94... I guess the moral of the story is that weird things happen, and it doesn't necessarily mean anything.

Like LuckyLeaf mentioned in the other thread that this got brought up in, the Hasbro reps at the Comic Con in San Diego sayed that Hasbro still owns all the rights to G1s, including rights to the artwork.

Well that's good, finally cleared up for me. Was slightly confused about it at first.

I had figured that's why they used G2 artwork on the DVDs.
Does anyone own the rights now? I saw a fakie pony and Walgreens a few months ago that had G1 artwork on the box. Of course, it was the pony was coloured to look like the pony inside the box, but it was definately the same G1 artwork.

Thanks, NightWing. ^_^ Here is a quote of what I wrote in the other post:
"Didn't someone ask one of the Hasbro reps at the San Diego Comic Con about this?? Hasbro confirmed they still have the rights to ALL their original characters and artwork, and license them out to other companies at will. This is why you see pony products like bobbleheads that are made by companies other than Hasbro. This happens even with the G3s; not all G3 products are made by Hasbro.
I think the design of that box set has more to do with some uninformed person at Rhino who got a selection of MLP art to choose from, and randomly picked G2 art. They probably had no clue there was a difference between those ponies and the ponies in the show (also, there is prototype animation art on the back of the cases).
I do think it's possible that Hasbro has maybe lost the rights to the TV series, though that doesn't make much sense to me. Probably it just didn't get printed on the boxes; again, an instance of poor packaging design."

LuckyLeaf's right, Hasbro DOES have the rights to both the G1 artwork and molds. That's how they can license products like these:
It's true that fakie companies sometimes rip-off the artwork (by tracing it, it looks like), but they don't do it legally. Nor are G1-mold fakies like the dollar store newborns legal; Hasbro just hasn't bothered to do anything about them.

OMG That's what Ithought too....it's due to plain cluelssness on those distributors' part. LOL
