My sympathies. I noticed a similar weird smell when I opened the container holding the bulk of my G1 collection, and took everyone out to give them a look-over. My Dancing Butterflies had so much mold in her, she was discolored! So out everyone came for baths and bleach-boils. DB came out fine once she was thoroughly scrubbed out, no lasting discoloration. But she -did- have a rough spot on the inside of one shoulder, like someone had taken a knife and scratched several rips in the vinyl.
Looks like I'm going to have to get some shelves for 'em--the ones out in the open are doing just fine.

I made a post similar a couple days ago...alot of my heard are starting to become discolored and stuff as well. Its like, WTF?! 98% of these were MINT when I bought them, and now, some of them arent even NM. Kinda makes me want to stop collecting a little. Why pay so much money for them, if all they are going to do is deteriorate over time, no matter how well you care for them?

I'm sorry to hear about your ponies!
All of mine are packed away in my garage, but I have never had any of them deteriorate (I do go out and check them from time to time).

That is awful! :nervous: I'm sorry to hear it.
That really weirds me out that it something like that happens now, especially because the ponies are so old. After 20 years, they start to deteriorate now? :eh:

Ponies seam to like cardboard boxes, at least, none I've kept in cardboard have had problims, while ones in plastic bags or containers seam to 'go bad'. I know that MOC G1's don't seam to have problims, maybe because they DO have cardboard on one side, and can 'breathe' through it?

Do you think this would be a problem... I have all my G3's in ziplock bags with the backcard, brush, charm etc... that they came with and they are all in boxes in a closet until I have room to display them at my house.

Oh, golden.. that is so terrible! I am so, so sorry!
Unfortunately, I have to agree with athy on this one. But I am so worried about my collection now, and I can't get to it because someone is sleeping in the room they are kept in. ;(

Well I think it's also a question where you live. In cold countries with little humidity in the air they problems with decomposing are much smaller then in countries like Thailand.
If you store the ponies in a dry!, cold place there shouldn't happen much. o.- The colder the better.
