I have no problems whatsoever bidding against usernames I recognize from the Arena. If I want it, I'm gonna bid; if I win, good, if not, oh well! And my eBay username is totally different from my Arena name, so people would likely not know it's me anyway (not that I'm concerned about it). If someone at the Arena PM'd me after sniping them on an auction and was bratty about it, I'd get a good laugh out of it.

i'm definitely of the "if i want it, i'm winning it" mentality. i've been outbid by others, and while i'm disappointed that i didn't get what i want, i don't hold hard feelings toward the person. i would certainly never email/pm somebody about their win, thats utterly tasteless. i'd like to think those i've outbid feel the same way.
knowing some general info about the person you're up against helps too. for example, there have been things i was mildly interested in, but knew the other bidders were more serious about winning so i let them go. i also know who falls into the "more money than brains" category and steer clear of those auctions too lol!
the only people i really "dislike" are those that feel emailing the seller about ending the auction early is appropriate...and the sellers that give in to their pressure. most times if they had left the auction alone, they would be getting more money than what their off ebay sale netted them.
if you're really worried though, maybe you should change your ebay id? that way people won't connect it with your arena name.

It was me!
It was really great the way it worked out, too! As far as outbidding other Arena members, I agree that if it happens it happens, *but* if the auction is for a lot (multiple ponies, accessories, whatever), I will PM the high bidder to ask what it is they are going for in the lot. Sometimes, like in the auction Sapphire mentioned, it will work out that the two interested parties are interested in completely different things (in our case, she wanted the ponies and I wanted the accessories!). So, I do appreciate it if people PM me if I am the high bidder on an auction for a lot for that very reason. Of course, this only applies if the person: recognizes my username (its hard to miss though), isn't interested in EVERY thing in the lot, and has enough time before the auction ends to send me a PM. Especially because *IF* we are interested in different things, it would stink to have us just outbid each other (pushing the auction price up), when we could have worked as a team; entering a slightly higher bid than we otherwise might have, knowing that we will be splitting costs between two people, saving money in the end.
Yay for teamwork!

Whoever bids highest wins. Simple as that. We all know we care about each other and don't mean to "steal" a pony away. If it really means a tremendous amount to someone you can always PM them after the auction. No one take offense if a member gets the pony you wanted. It's not personal!

Last year I got abused by an ebay member for outbidding them so now I have two ebay accounts, I beat them again recently and felt secretly happy, its not nice though when someone makes you feel bad for winning....its an auction no niceties about it

For me, ebay is pretty much a free zone. because there is no stopping everyone from bidding on what you want. not even "i wont bid" cant prevent the person from going after the pony.
I do try to avoid bidding on ponies i know arena-ites are trying to get, but sometimes the deal is just too good, or in the last few moments of the auction they bid too. I dont hold it against them at all. we all want ponies. if they outbid me, then so be it if they dont, i hope they dont harvest poor feelings toward me. |
Ditto, word for word.
If I see a pony I like which is ending soon, and the high bidder is a name I know from the Arena, I generally refrain from bidding. I usually lose, and I'd rather not inflate the price for a fellow member!
Having said that, I really don't expect anyone else to do the same for me, and I certainly wouldn't hold it against them if they did. I'm a freak; when I recognise people's usernames it makes me smile a bit.

The other day I saw Roogna's username on a item I really wanted - but I didn't bid. She didn't win.... but well, I didn't want to go against her, out of curtesy. I *think* its an english thing. I'm not sure if I would expect another person to do that for me tho.

I don't know that it's a British thing... I think it's something that conscientious people do. If I know someone I don't always bid on the auction. I seem to find the same auctions as Prixton. Sometimes I outbid Prixton, sometimes I don't because I won the last item. *shrugs* Maybe there are more nice British people though, lol.

Prixton and I both want the same auction, but for different things. Well technically I do want the whole auction but Prixton is one little wand away from having the whole Princess set. So, I can live without it. If all goes well she will win the set and I will buy the pony from her. I still do think Ebay is pretty much fair game, but what's wrong with helping each other out? Still though, if someone outbids you, it is nothing against you and not something you should take personally.
Also, on the flip side, what if you were the seller? Wouldn't you want and deserve to have your pony sell for a fair price? Just something to ponder.
Love to all,
Renee
