Does is really cost GBP3.50 to mail one pony in an envelope via airmail to the US?

Totally depends on the pony. I'd say no...

i can usually send a baby for about £1.50, and an adult for about 2.50, could be packaging costs though.

I would have said the actual postage would be £2.50-3, but then you would have the cost of the envelope.
