I use straightners on a low heat setting and make sure the hair is wet, and keep moving the straightners quite quickly otherwise the hair will melt.
Only straighten the metallic tinsel though, the clear tinsel will just go really curly and then you wont be able to do anything with it.

Funny, I'm in the midst of making a tutorial for my web site on this...

I have some pics of the process and what I use:

the pony subject:

what I use:
(water, comb, flat iron on setting 3 out of 20)

Then I take a small wet bundle and pull it thru the flat iron repeatedly until it's dry:

Then I repeat this with all the tinsel in the mane and tail in small bunches:

until she's all fixed Poke Tounge

that what you were looking for?

for G3s, I've heard that using hair straighteners doesn't work; makes the tinsel go curly.

So for G3s I use a vaccume. It doesn't straighten it exactly, but it tends to make it behave and conform to whatever position the hair is in.
De-tach everything and just use the tube; suck the hair in, wait a moment, then take the tube away. If the hair doesn't look neat, repeat until it does.

well, I only really concentrate on G1's sorry about that. But I've had some success with the hot water combing method on my daughter's G3s. Just put water in the kettle and let it almost boil, then pour it into a bowl and stick the pony's head in the water and comb it there. Then let it dry a little and condition it. Seems to help with the G3 tinsel, and it hasn't melted the starswirl or uh, fizzy pop (I think)tinsel yet. I've heard it can melt some of the cheaper hair? never had that happen yet, but I'll start keeping tabs on exact temps for all that.

yeah, I would love to know *how* exactly you use the vaccuum??? fascinating. Never would have thought of that!

I have used a round brush and blow dryer on some oh mine, set at a lower heat and it has worked. Of course it doesn't always stay that way but it does stay for awhile if the pony isn't being handled too much.

Oh my goodness, SilverCygnet! Talk about amazing results! Thank you so much for the pictures...They will come in very handy, I'm sure. I have a couple princesses who need some serious tinsel help. Maybe now there is hope for them after all! Smile
