Okay here is my best shot at it....
A Pinata is a hollow Paper mache (i think that is what it is made of.) that is filled with candy and little treats and then closed up. It is hung up from a tree or the ceiling and then you are blindfolded and you swing at it with a big stick. The goal is to break the pinata and release all the candy. I believe the tradition started in Mexico or South America but I am not sure.
That is all I know about them I used to know all about the history and stuff because I did a report on traditions or something like that...but I have since forgotten.
I think that is the basic idea of it. Hope that helps

Oh oh oh! I know this one...
The piņata tradition began in Mexico and parts of South America. Piņatas were originally made out of clay and used mainly for the Day of the Dead celebration. The original piņatas had either devil or donkey shape (the donkey also symbolizing evil). The were beaten with a stick to scare off any devils or demons that may want to cause trouble on that spiritual day. It also was a way to say "We hate evil, we don't want it here". The original piņatas weren't filled with candy but eventually they were as a form of reward for managing to break it. (We made a clay piņata once... they are hard to break and *dangerous* when they do) X)
Piņatas are also used for christmas celebrations. The devil shape is used too but another popular shape is a star, sometimes with a tail. Its traditional for the person controling the rope attached to the piņata, to make it "fly" across the area where the children are gathered, to symbolize the star that signaled the birth of Christ. These piņatas are usually filled with candy and/or small wooden/plastic toys.
Nowdays, most piņatas are made out of wire and paper mache.
Gosh, now I want to make a piņata for this christmas. XP
